Over the years Nebraska has become one of the best college football programs in the country. Through 2019, Nebraska is ranked seventh in all-time wins among FBS teams. Nebraska has won 26 bowl games and has claimed five national titles.
5. 1994 13-0 (Orange Bowl – W)
Our countdown starts with the 1994 team. The Cornhuskers were coached by Tom Osborne and finished the year 13-0. 5 of the 13 wins came against ranked teams. The Cornhuskers led the nation in rushing and Lawrence Phillips finished the year with 1894 yards and 16 touchdowns. Nebraska ended the season with a 24-17 win against Miami in the Orange Bowl and finished the season ranked #1 in the final AP Poll.
4. 1970 11-0-1 (Orange Bowl – W)
The 1970 team finished the season with 11 wins, zero losses, and one tie. The tie came in week 2 at #3 USC. In the Orange Bowl, Nebraska beat LSU 17-12. The Cornhuskers finished the year ranked #1 in the final AP Poll. Jerry Murtaugh was named the Big Eight Player of the Year and Bob Devaney was named the National Coach of the Year.
3. 1997 13-0 (Orange Bowl – W)
The #3 spot belongs to the 1997 team. Ahman Green ran for 1877 yards while averaging 6.8 yards per rush. Scott Frost added 24 total touchdowns. Grant Wistrom won the Lombardi award (given to the best college football player) and Aaron Taylor won the Outland Trophy (given to the best interior lineman).The Cornhuskers destroyed Texas A&M 54-15 in the Big 12 Championship game. In the Orange Bowl, Nebraska beat Tennessee 42-17. The Cornhuskers finished the season ranked #2 in the final AP Poll behind #1 Michigan.
2. 1995 12-0 (Fiesta Bowl – W)
The #2 spot belongs to the 1995 team. Coached by Tom Osborne, Nebraska breezed to a 12-0 undefeated season. The offense averaged 53.2 points per game and they were led by Tommie Frazier and Ahman Green. Frazier finished the year with 31 touchdowns and Green added 16 touchdowns. Tommie Frazier, Aaron Graham, and Jared Tomich were all named 1st team All-Americans. During the season Nebraska had four wins against top 10 opponents and the closest game was a 35-21 win against Washington State. Nebraska smacked Florida, 62-24 ,in the Fiesta Bowl to finish the season ranked #1 in the Final AP poll.
1. 1971 13-0 (Orange Bowl – W)
The 1971 team is the best Nebraska football team of all-time. The team was coached by Bob Devaney and finished the year undefeated. The Cornhuskers offense averaged 39.0 points per game (3rd in the nation) and the defense gave up 8.0 points per game (2nd in the nation). Jerry Tagge finished the year with 26 total touchdowns and Jeff Kinney added 17 touchdowns. Johnny Rodgers paced the receivers with 11 receiving touchdowns. Larry Jacobson, Willie Harper, and Rich Glover commanded the defense. Nebraska ended the year with a 38-6 win against Alabama in the Orange Bowl. Three Cornhuskers were picked in the first round of the 1972 NFL Draft.
