In the Orange Bowl, Nebraska beat Tennessee 42-17. The Cornhuskers finished the season ranked #2 in the final AP Poll behind #1 Michigan.

The offense averaged 53.2 points per game and they were led by Tommie Frazier and Ahman Green. Frazier finished the year with 31 touchdowns and Green added 16 touchdowns. Tommie Frazier, Aaron Graham, and Jared Tomich were all named 1st team All-Americans. During the season Nebraska had four wins against top 10 opponents and the closest game was a 35-21 win against Washington State. Nebraska smacked Florida, 62-24 ,in the Fiesta Bowl to finish the season ranked #1 in the Final AP poll.

Jerry Tagge finished the year with 26 total touchdowns and Jeff Kinney added 17 touchdowns. Johnny Rodgers paced the receivers with 11 receiving touchdowns. Larry Jacobson, Willie Harper, and Rich Glover commanded the defense. Nebraska ended the year with a 38-6 win against Alabama in the Orange Bowl. Three Cornhuskers were picked in the first round of the 1972 NFL Draft.
